In Jean Grenier’s book The Island, there is a passage about the two kinds of death that Plotinus speaks of. He distinguishes between natural death and another kind of death — a philosophical one that may come before the natural end. If that’s true, perhaps I am already dead while still alive. Perhaps those around me are also living their lives already having met their own deaths. The ideas of death and life — perhaps they are nothing more than hollow shells. I live as though dead, and live on as though I have already died.
